Something was Missing

Something was Missing

Hello, wonderful person. Remember our Discord community? It hasn’t grown as quickly as we’d hoped, and it’s obvious now why: it wasn’t interesting.

We had created a server, made some channels, and then mentioned it to people, but there was almost nothing inside that server that would be interesting enough to keep people around and excited to come back for more. It was like a bus stop people waited at before going somewhere else. But, it can be so much more.

As I’ve been interacting with other Discord servers, I only just realized they have aspects to them (self-assigned roles, points, level ups, etc) that Ugeddit’s Discord hasn’t been using yet.

Self-assigned roles, like which country you’re from, what your interests are, and more give people a sense of personality and customization in the server. Points give people a tangible sense of accomplishment for interacting positively. Level ups show people their progress as they continue to be an active member in the community. And, there are many more things that can easily be done that massively change how people feel about being part of the server.

I think our focus was unhealthily split between wanting to code the app, needing to build a community, and using Discord as a “foyer” for people joining the app, but also not wanting to advertise the app, and because new members weren’t being given helpful information, this meant people were joining the server to wait for nothing. Realizing that, obviously that’s not going to work, right?

But now, with people being able to customize their profile roles, gain points, level up, and more, there will actually be substance in joining the server, and with a dedicated channel for sharing communication skills, interview tips, and other resources and advice that people may want to learn, there is now going to be much more value people gain by chatting and participating in the community, isn’t there?

Let’s make it happen!
